While in Los Angeles, Dr. Gowan — an active sports enthusiast who still plays ice hockey — worked with the team physicians for most of the professional teams in the area: the Dodgers, Rams, Lakers, Kings, Lasers, L.A.Express and the Angels. In the summer of 1984, Dr. Gowan returned to Hamilton to open this practice in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and was officially designated the orthopaedic consultant for Colgate University athletic teams. He has served as the Chief of Surgery, President and Vice President of the Community Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, and as a member of the hospital board. He has coached all levels of youth hockey and covers the Hamilton High School ice hockey and many of the soccer and football games.
Dr. Gowan, the son of a farmer, was raised in Straits Corners, NY and graduated valedictorian from Tioga Central High School. In 1969, he was a Rotary exchange student in Perth, Western Australia. He is married to Carolyn (nee Pope) from nearby Spencer, NY and they have three sons, Parker, Ian and Teddy.
